Laparoscopic-robotic nephrectomy offers minimally invasive kidney removal
Laparoscopic-robotic nephrectomy is a surgical technique used for the removal of a kidney through small incisions in the abdominal wall. According to Anastasios Michalakis, a urological surgeon and Director of the H' Urology Clinic at Metropolitan General, this method is considered a gold standard due to its precision and reduced invasiveness.
The procedure involves creating small incisions and using carbon dioxide gas to create space for the surgeon. A high-definition camera provides a magnified view of the surgical field, allowing for the isolation of the kidney, vascular branches, and the ureter if necessary. The kidney is then removed through a slightly larger incision using a protective bag.
This technique can be applied for both radical nephrectomy (complete removal) and partial nephrectomy, where only the portion containing a tumor is removed to preserve healthy tissue. Compared to open surgery, which requires large incisions and results in more tissue trauma, blood loss, and postoperative pain, the robotic-laparoscopic approach offers faster recovery and less invasiveness.
