LAPD and UCLA conduct counter-terrorism drill at Olympic Village site

The Los Angeles Police Department and UCLA Police Department conducted a large-scale counter-terrorism training exercise at UCLA on Wednesday. The simulation, centered near the Hedrick Hall dormitory, involved an active shooter and explosion scenario designed to test law enforcement coordination, communication, and emergency response capabilities.

The training specifically targeted security preparations for the 2028 Summer Olympics, as Hedrick Hall is slated to serve as the Athletes Village. The five-hour drill included SWAT officers using tactical gear, automatic weapons, and battering rams, as well as a police helicopter lowering officers onto the dormitory roof. Approximately 60 actors participated in the exercise, portraying hostages, shooters, and victims.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated that while the focus is on securing the upcoming Olympics, the training is also essential for everyday preparedness. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Jaime Moore and UCLA Associate Vice Chancellor Steve Lurie also noted the importance of the exercise in building muscle memory and ensuring seamless teamwork between agencies during critical incidents.
