Lapland District Court sentences man for fatal Kittilä collision

The Lapland District Court has sentenced a 19-year-old man to three months of conditional imprisonment for two counts of manslaughter and aggravated endangerment of traffic safety. The sentence follows a fatal collision that occurred in November 2024 on the road between Rovaniemi and Kittilä.

According to the court, the man attempted to overtake a vehicle combination that obstructed visibility of the oncoming lane. The resulting collision caused both vehicles to catch fire, resulting in the deaths of a man and a woman in the oncoming car.

The defendant contested the charges, suggesting that a sudden gust of wind and icy patches caused the vehicle to drift into the oncoming lane. However, the court ruled that evidence did not support these claims and concluded that the man had consciously initiated the overtaking maneuver despite visibility being ‘practically non-existent’ due to the large vehicle being passed.
