Laptop prices face increases due to rising memory chip costs
The global laptop market is facing significant price volatility due to rising costs for essential components, particularly memory chips. Industry experts and manufacturers note that the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers is driving massive demand for high-capacity memory, creating a supply squeeze often referred to as ‘RAMageddon’.
Some manufacturers, such as XMG, have already implemented price increases ranging from 100 to 300 euros on certain models. Reports indicate that some DDR5 memory modules have seen costs increase nearly sixfold compared to mid-2025 levels. While Acer CEO Jason Chen noted that the shortage of mainstream DDR4 and DDR5 is largely over, he warned that PC prices could rise by 5% to 20% this quarter, with significant relief for consumers potentially delayed until mid-2027.
Qualcomm executives have also highlighted the difficulty in predicting when the market will stabilize. As manufacturers face higher costs for RAM, SSDs, and processors, they must choose between absorbing the expenses, reducing hardware specifications, or passing the costs on to consumers.
