Lapu-Lapu City faces severe electricity supply crisis
Lapu-Lapu City in the Philippines is facing a severe electricity supply crisis characterized by frequent rotating power outages. The Lapu-Lapu City Council has demanded concrete action from local authorities to address the shortage, summoning representatives from the National Grid Corp of the Philippines (NGCP), the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), and Mactan Electric Co. (MECO) for questioning.
Vice Mayor Celedonio Sitoy reported that the NGCP has been unable to provide a definitive timeline for when the outages will cease. The crisis is attributed to inadequate generation capacity, including broken power plants that are no longer repairable, and limited electricity imports from the Mindanao region. The Visayas grid has recently faced repeated yellow and red alerts due to these capacity issues. Sitoy projected that the supply gap could persist for more than two months as additional generation capacity is urgently required.
