L’Aquila hosts 47th Fuoco del Morrone torch procession
The 47th edition of the Fuoco del Morrone – Il Cammino del Perdono has commenced, marking a significant cultural event within the Perdonanza Celestiniana celebrations. The eight-day procession begins at the Eremo di Sant’Onofrio al Morrone, where the ceremonial torch and the Lucerna del Cammino del Perdono are lit.
The torch will travel through various hermitages and towns, arriving in L’Aquila on August 23. This journey symbolically retraces the 1294 pilgrimage of Pietro del Morrone. The event serves as a precursor to the 732nd Perdonanza and aligns with L’Aquila’s upcoming designation as the Italian Capital of Culture for 2026.
Pierluigi Biondi, Mayor of L’Aquila, described the event as the most authentic soul of the Perdonanza, connecting spirituality, history, and community. Floro Panti, president of the UNESCO ICH committee, noted that the procession is a key element of the Perdonanza Celestiniana’s recognition as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, carrying a message of peace and reconciliation.
