L'Aquila hosts the 732nd Perdonanza Celestiniana

The 732nd edition of the Perdonanza Celestiniana has commenced in L'Aquila, Italy. This historic religious and cultural event, which was established in 1294 by Pope Celestine V, is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The festivities began with the arrival of the ‘Fuoco del Morrone’ (Fire of Morrone) and the ceremonial lighting of the Tripod of Peace at Palazzo Margherita. The opening celebrations included a televised event titled ‘La forza del Perdono’ at the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, featuring various artists and musicians.

As L'Aquila serves as the Italian Capital of Culture for 2026, the event includes several cultural programs, such as the International Dance Gala at the Basilica of San Bernardino. The Perdonanza commemorates the ‘Bolla del Perdono’, which grants plenary indulgence to pilgrims visiting the Collemaggio Basilica.
