L'Aquila hosts Coldiretti Village and urban transhumance event

The Coldiretti Village has opened in L'Aquila, featuring an “urban transhumance” where a flock of sheep was led through the historic center from Villa Comunale to Piazza Duomo. The event, part of the L'Aquila 2026 Italian Capital of Culture celebrations, includes a market with 40 producers from the Abruzzo provinces.

During the inauguration, Coldiretti Abruzzo President Pietropaolo Martinelli and Undersecretary of Agriculture Luigi D’Eramo participated in a discussion regarding a “Pact for food and health” in Abruzzo. The proposal aims to involve the regional government, the healthcare system, and the scientific community to promote fresh, local, and seasonal products in hospitals and school cafeterias.

Regional agricultural data shows that in 2020, Abruzzo had 9,948 farms with livestock, with sheep farming accounting for 3,940 of those operations. Agricultural production in the region grew by 3.8% in volume in 2025.
