L'Aquila hosts national conference on maternity and family policy

Minister for Family, Natality and Equal Opportunities Eugenia Roccella participated in a national conference on family in L'Aquila, titled ‘Life, Naturally: Maternity in a Changing World’. The event addressed the challenges of motherhood in contemporary society and the institutional responsibilities regarding demographic decline.

Roccella emphasized the need for a more supportive environment for parents, particularly mothers, noting that maternity should not be viewed as a professional disadvantage or a ‘defect in a curriculum’. She highlighted government initiatives aimed at improving work-life balance, including three months of parental leave at 80% of salary, increased reimbursements for nurseries, and stabilized funding for summer centers to assist municipalities.

The conference featured contributions from poet Davide Rondoni, as well as personal accounts from Olympic champion Francesca Lollobrigida and Laura Lucchin, mother of Sammy Basso. The goal of the discussed policies is to ensure women can freely choose motherhood without having to renounce their careers or personal aspirations.
