Lara Gillespie wins gold in points race at Cycling World Championships

Lara Gillespie has won the gold medal in the points race at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, China. The 25-year-old Irish athlete secured the title with 42 points, following a 25km race consisting of 100 laps and 10 sprints.

Gillespie’s victory, driven by maximum points in the second and fifth sprints, allowed her to finish ahead of Denmark’s Amalie Dideriksen, who took second with 37 points, and Belgium’s Shari Bossuyt, who finished third with 35 points. This win follows a narrow second-place finish in the scratch race earlier in the week.

This marks Gillespie’s second World Championship gold medal in two years, following her 2025 victory in the Elimination race in Chile. She expressed gratitude to Cycling Ireland and Sport Ireland for their support.
