Lara Martínez emerges as leading candidate for PSOE Gijón primaries

Lara Martínez Fernández, the Vice-Counselor of Tourism for the Principality of Asturias, is emerging as a leading candidate for the PSOE primaries in Gijón to select a mayoral candidate. Martínez reportedly holds the support of the majority of the Gijón Socialist Group's Executive Commission.

The primary process is expected to begin on September 4. Other potential candidates include local councilman José Ramón Tueroy and Carmen Moreno, the former manager of the Union of Merchants of the Principality of Asturias. To officially qualify, candidates must collect endorsements from between 15% and 20% of the party's members in good standing.

Asturian President Adrián Barbón, who also serves as the Secretary General of the FSA, expressed surprise regarding the shift toward Martínez, noting a “curious twist in the script” compared to previous internal polling that had also considered Manuel Vallina-Victorero.
