Large ammonite fossil recovered from Ibiza mountains
A massive ammonite fossil discovered in the mountains of Ibiza has been successfully recovered. The operation, conducted this Monday, involved the Ibiza Fire Department's Vertical Rescue Group (GRV) to safely extract the specimen from its forested location.
The fossil, which dates back millions of years, was first spotted by a hiker during a summer excursion. Following the discovery, geologist Luis Tostón identified the specimen as a significant geological find. The discoverer has announced his intention to donate the fossil to ensure its preservation.
The specimen will be transported to the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) for study and conservation. It is expected to be displayed at the UIB Geology Museum to contribute to the preservation of Ibiza's natural and historical heritage.
