Large cannabis seizure at Kuala Lumpur International Airport

Between 11 July and 17 July 2024, Malaysian police seized 247.8 kg of cannabis worth about RM20 million at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The operation, led by the KLIA Narcotics Investigation Division with assistance from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, uncovered the drugs hidden in checked luggage destined for export to Europe. Seven suspects were arrested – a local woman and six foreign nationals – and are being remanded under the Dangerous Drugs Act. The seizure also included cash, jewellery and other items, and some foreign suspects tested positive for THC. Earlier attempts on 13 July intercepted 149.2 kg in eight bags, leading to the detention of four foreign individuals, and a further arrest on 14 July involved 31.2 kg. Since January, over half a metric ton of cannabis, valued at more than RM50 million, has been confiscated at KLIA, involving 38 arrests.

The suspects were reportedly paid up to RM15,000 for each shipment, with the local courier receiving RM6,000, and were motivated by the promise of travel to Europe.
