Large Data Center Planned Near Nickelsdorf, Austria

Officials in Burgenland, Austria, are considering a large data‑center project near the town of Nickelsdorf in the Neusiedl am See district. The site, owned by the regional economic agency, covers 41‑50 hectares and was previously earmarked for a business park.

Mayor Gerhard Zapfl said he has been informed but has no details; the agency and Netz Burgenland confirm multiple inquiries for such facilities but no ready‑to‑implement plan. The proposal raises concerns about electricity and water supply, especially given a nearby 336 MW hybrid power plant and the region’s limited water resources. The project would be comparable in size to Google’s new data centre in Kronstorf, Upper Austria, which has sparked protests.
