Large fish caught in Portugal and Brazil

In Portugal, a giant catfish (Silurus glanis), measuring 2.25 meters in length, was caught in the Ponsul River in Lentiscais, Castelo Branco. The catch, made by Duarte Gomes with assistance from experienced fisherman Joaquim Jonqueres, came within eight centimeters of the national record set in May 2025. While notable for sport fishing, the catfish is an invasive exotic species that poses a threat to the biodiversity of Portuguese aquatic ecosystems, particularly in the Tagus River basin.

In Brazil, a large bighead carp weighing 51.7 kg and measuring nearly 1.40 meters was caught in Lago Passo Real, near Quinze de Novembro, Rio Grande do Sul. The catch was made by veterinarian Iago Luis Feldkircher and fisherman Ildemar Jost during a period of severe drought that has lowered the reservoir to historic lows. The fish was intended for local gastronomic commercial use.
