Large Hadron Collider researchers leverage AI to manage future data surges

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, continues to drive scientific and technological innovation. Utilizing superconducting magnets cooled to near absolute zero, the 27-kilometer ring accelerates subatomic particles to speeds approaching the speed of light to study the fundamental components of matter.

As the LHC prepares for future upgrades expected to be operational by 2030, it will face a massive increase in data, producing approximately 40 million collisions per second. To manage this, researchers are developing new methods using artificial intelligence. A new technique called ‘contrastive learning’ is being tested to help the CMS detector distinguish between overlapping particle cascades (showers).

By learning to identify similarities and differences between signals, this AI approach aims to more accurately separate particles and estimate their energy, even during highly crowded collision events. This technological evolution follows the LHC’s history of major breakthroughs, such as the 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson.
