Large lizard spotted in Gwanggyo New Town apartment complex

A large lizard, estimated to be approximately 1 meter in length, was recently spotted on a walking trail within an apartment complex in Gwanggyo New Town, Suwon. The reptile is believed to be a water monitor, which is classified as a Grade 2 endangered species internationally.

Local residents have shared videos and photos of the animal, leading to growing concerns regarding public safety. The sighting is particularly sensitive as the area is located near a library and an elementary school, causing anxiety among parents of young children. While sightings have been reported in community forums, no official reports have been filed with police or fire services at this time.

This incident follows a series of recent sightings of non-native reptiles in urban areas, including a Siamese crocodile found in Yeoju last month and a 30cm turtle suspected of being an invasive species in Busan earlier this month.
