Large spider species reported in Austria and Slovakia

Large spider species, including the Lycosa singoriensis (commonly referred to as the southern tarantula) and Hogna radiata, are being increasingly reported across Central Europe, specifically in Austria and Slovakia.

In Austria, sightings have been noted in Burgenland, Styria, and Carinthia. The Hogna radiata can reach a body length of approximately 2.5 centimeters and prefers warm, dry, sandy, or stony habitats. The Lycosa singoriensis, considered one of the largest spiders in the region, can reach up to 4 centimeters in length.

Experts note that the likelihood of encountering these spiders increases during autumn as males travel to find mates and females seek locations for wintering. This movement may lead them into gardens, garages, or homes. While their size may be intimidating, experts from the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU) state they pose no significant danger to humans and advise against harming or killing them.
