Italy tops medal standings at European Athletics Championships
Italy has secured the top position in the medal standings at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The national team achieved significant success, including gold medals for Larissa Iapichino in the long jump and the men’s 4x400m relay team.
Other notable performances include Massimo Stanonella winning the race walk marathon, and Andy Diaz securing gold in the triple jump. The Italian delegation also saw success in the shot put, with Leonardo Fabbri taking gold and Zane Weir earning silver. FIDAL President Stefano Mei described the competition as a “thriller,” noting the team's resilience despite the absence of key athletes like Marcell Jacobs.
In addition to athletics, Italy showed strong performance in swimming at the European Championships in Paris, earning 20 medals. Regional contributions from Emilia-Romagna and Puglia were also highlighted as significant factors in the overall success of the Italian sporting campaign.
