Tempi tragedy: Prosecutor orders immediate exhumation of victims

The Larissa Court of First Instance Prosecutor, Aikaterini Papaioannou, has ordered the immediate exhumation of the remains of victims from the Tempi train tragedy. This order follows decisions by the Larissa Misdemeanor Council to facilitate specialized laboratory testing requested by eight or nine families of the victims.

The investigation aims to move beyond simple DNA identification to include comprehensive toxicological and biochemical examinations. This follows the identification of the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) as a facility capable of performing these specialized tests, a development supported by correspondence from the Forensic and Toxicology Laboratory of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Forensic experts have been instructed to immediately finalize the technical and scientific requirements for cooperation with the NFI, including protocols for the collection, preservation, and transport of samples. The prosecutor has also demanded the immediate determination of an exhumation date in coordination with relevant services to ensure the integrity of the samples and the presence of necessary personnel.
