Larissa scammers use AI voice cloning to defraud family
Criminals in Larissa, Greece, have reportedly escalated telephone fraud tactics by utilizing artificial intelligence to clone voices. In a recent incident, scammers recorded a mother's voice under the guise of a wrong number to create a digital replica.
Using this AI-generated voice, the perpetrators contacted her minor child, who was home alone. The scammers convinced the child that they were indeed the mother and warned of a serious electrical fault in the home that posed a fire risk. They instructed the child to gather cash and jewelry and leave them in bags in the building's entrance area.
The criminals, who had been monitoring the household, arrived shortly after to collect the valuables and flee. The theft was discovered when the parents returned home. Local police are investigating the incident as part of a broader investigation into similar scams targeting both elderly citizens and children in the region.
