David Shoebridge elected leader of the Australian Greens
David Shoebridge has been elected as the new leader of the Australian Greens, following the sudden resignation of Larissa Waters. Waters stepped down from the leadership due to a significant decline in her health caused by a pre-existing chronic kidney disease. She intends to take medical leave but plans to return to her duties as a Queensland senator when possible.
Shoebridge, a former barrister and NSW senator, secured the leadership after a contest involving several prominent party members. He will be joined by Victorian senator Steph Hodgins-May, who was elected as the new deputy leader. The new leadership team aims to position the Greens as a primary alternative to the Labor Party, focusing on climate action, economic security, and resisting corporate influence.
The leadership transition occurs during a period of internal reflection for the party following the 2025 federal election. The new leadership has pledged to address the climate crisis and advocate for a fair return on resources while maintaining Australian independence from foreign interests.
