Larnaca General Hospital nurses hold strike over overcrowding
Nursing staff at Larnaca General Hospital held a spontaneous one-hour strike, from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM, to protest long-standing systemic issues within the facility.
According to PASYDY and the nursing sector, the primary cause of the protest is severe overcrowding in the hospital's clinics. This congestion has resulted in patients waiting for extended periods in the Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) while awaiting available beds for admission.
Staff reported reaching the limits of professional exhaustion due to continuous overtime work required to meet patient needs. While hospital management unilaterally opened five additional beds staffed on an overtime basis, nursing representatives stated this measure has failed to provide a fundamental solution. The protesters have called on the Health Insurance Organization (OKYPY) to implement permanent and substantive solutions rather than temporary measures that merely mask the underlying problems.
