Larry Nassar removed from Michigan sex offender registry

Larry Nassar, the disgraced former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor, has been removed from Michigan’s sex offender registry. This follows a Michigan Supreme Court ruling that determined 2021 amendments to the Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA) cannot be applied retroactively to offenses committed before July 1, 2011.

Nassar’s removal is part of a larger purge by the Michigan State Police, which has removed more than 20,000 names from the state’s database. While Nassar’s convictions occurred after the 2011 cutoff, prosecutors noted that the underlying conduct of his crimes took place before that date, triggering the court's ruling.

The Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office expressed deep concern regarding the decision, stating that the ruling eliminates registration requirements for these offenders and removes a measure of protection and awareness for the community. Despite his removal from the registry, Nassar remains incarcerated, serving multiple decades-long prison sentences for his crimes.
