Lars Klingbeil rejects calls for SPD leadership change

SPD leader Lars Klingbeil has rejected internal calls for a radical change in party leadership and direction following poor polling numbers. Despite demands from some party members for a special party convention to replace the current leadership, Klingbeil stated he is happy to remain party chairman.

Klingbeil advised the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to avoid internal personnel debates and instead focus on the practical concerns of citizens, such as job security and future stability. He emphasized that the party is strongest when it addresses the problems of the people rather than focusing on itself.

The party is currently facing low approval ratings, with recent polling placing the SPD at approximately 12 percent. Amidst this, some members have suggested Manuela Schwesig, the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as a potential successor. Klingbeil praised Schwesig as a role model for her political approach and her stance against the AfD.

Regarding policy, Klingbeil defended the current reform course of the federal government, focusing on economic stability, social welfare, and security policy. He argued that a change in leadership would not resolve systemic issues such as budget deficits.
