Las Dunas tourism project suspended by federal judge in Yucatán

A federal judge in Yucatán has issued a provisional suspension against the “Las Dunas” tourism project in Chuburná Puerto, Progreso. The ruling halts the execution of construction and land-use licenses, as well as any construction activities that could impact the local environment.

The legal action was initiated by local residents, supported by Kanan Derechos Humanos A. C. and the Colectiva Salvemos las Dunas. The plaintiffs argue that the Municipality of Progreso failed to ensure environmental public participation mechanisms before granting permits. They contend that the community should have been informed of potential environmental impacts and mitigation measures in accordance with the Escazú Agreement.

This judicial measure follows a previous temporary closure imposed by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa). To maintain the suspension, the court has required a 50,000 peso guarantee, which the Salvemos las Dunas collective is currently seeking through donations. The court also ordered authorities to implement a methodology for public consultation regarding the complex.
