Las Palmas de Gran Canaria seeks cultural alliance with Leuven

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is strengthening its bid to become a European Capital of Culture in 2031 by establishing ties with Leuven, Belgium, which holds the title for 2030.

Mayor Carolina Darias met with Leuven’s Culture Councilor Bert Cornillie and Municipal Culture Director Piet Forger to exchange experiences regarding their respective candidacy processes. The delegations analyzed their project dossiers to identify common interests and potential avenues for artistic and cultural collaboration in the coming years.

The meeting is part of an internationalization strategy for the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 2031 candidacy, aiming to build networks with other European Capitals of Culture. Leuven’s 2030 project, ‘LOV2030 – Leuven & Beyond,’ focuses on the concept of ‘Human Nature,’ addressing social polarization and the climate crisis through culture.
