Las Tunas, Cuba, commemorates historical milestones
The province of Las Tunas, Cuba, is observing significant historical milestones. In the municipality of Colombia, local educators and students are commemorating the anniversary of the September 9, 1958, battle at the La Federal hacienda. This engagement marked a pivotal moment for the Column No. 8 ‘Ciro Redondo’ led by Ernesto Che Guevara during the revolutionary struggle.
Simultaneously, the city of Las Tunas is celebrating its 230th anniversary. Historical accounts highlight the region's evolution from indigenous territories like Maniabón, Boyucá, and Cueybá to its consolidation as a town around the San Jerónimo parish in 1796. The city's name originates from a cattle ranch known for its wild prickly pear plants (tuna brava).
