Las Tunas residents demand improved waste management
Residents of Las Tunas, Cuba, have raised urgent complaints regarding waste accumulation in streets and neighborhoods during the city's 230th anniversary celebrations. Citizens reported significant issues with micro-dumps, irregular waste collection, and refuse accumulating near homes, schools, and medical clinics.
Specific reports highlighted garbage blocking roads and instances where waste caught fire in public thoroughfares. One resident described the urban condition by stating, “Nuestra ciudad es un vertedero vivo en cada esquina” (Our city is a living landfill on every corner).
Local authorities acknowledged the difficulties facing the Empresa de Servicios Comunales, noting that the entity is currently in a formation stage. Additionally, fuel shortages have been cited as a primary obstacle preventing more extensive waste collection efforts.
