Las Vegas police officer and wife accused of luxury fraud spree

A suspended Las Vegas police officer, Antonio Chavez, and his wife, Claudia Guzman-Marquez, are accused of conducting a months-long credit card fraud scheme across Nevada and California. Between May 25 and August 3, the couple allegedly made luxury purchases and bought tens of thousands of dollars in gift cards, only to later dispute the charges with credit card companies by claiming their wallets and purses had been stolen.

Investigators allege the scheme included a $13,000 gift card purchase in Las Vegas and a $1,200 transaction at an Apple Store. Chavez is also accused of filing a false police report with the Henderson Police Department to support his claims of theft. The couple faces multiple charges, including theft of between $25,000 and $100,000, burglary of a business, conspiracy to commit burglary and theft, and perjury.

Following their arrest, a judge denied prosecutors' request for $100,000 cash bail and house arrest, citing Chavez’s lack of criminal history and the nonviolent nature of the charges. Both defendants were released under electronic monitoring.
