Las Vegas police shooting kills former football player and toddler

A police shootout in Las Vegas resulted in the deaths of 28-year-old Quinton Baker, a former college football running back, and his 3-year-old son, Kentre. The incident occurred in February after police responded to reports that Baker had attacked his girlfriend, Raneka Pate, and another woman following a revelation regarding his sexuality.

According to police, Baker fled the apartment while holding his son and pointing a gun at the child’s chest. Bodycam footage released recently shows Baker advancing on officers while shouting that he would shoot himself. While authorities initially claimed Baker shot his son while using him as a human shield, officials now acknowledge they cannot determine whether the fatal shot was fired by Baker or by police officers.

Baker, a former standout athlete for Portland State and Western Kentucky universities, was a highly ranked prospect during his collegiate career. Raneka Pate has disputed the official police account and is reportedly considering a wrongful-death lawsuit.
