Las Vegas Raiders confirm Kirk Cousins remains starting quarterback

Following a 45-17 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 5, Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak confirmed that veteran Kirk Cousins will remain the team’s starting quarterback. Despite the rookie No. 1 overall pick, Fernando Mendoza, making his NFL debut during the final minutes of the blowout, the coaching staff stated there will be no immediate change to the depth chart.

Mendoza appeared in garbage time, completing six of eight passes for 48 yards. While Kubiak expressed confidence in the rookie’s readiness, he emphasized that Cousins remains the starter. Cousins has performed well this season, ranking seventh in the NFL in passing yards and tied for second in touchdown passes.

However, analysts suggest the veteran's margin for error may be decreasing. With the Raiders currently at a 3-2 record, upcoming matchups against the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams are viewed as critical tests. Some observers note that if the team's performance continues to decline, the organization may accelerate Mendoza's development to secure the franchise's future.
