Las Vegas Raiders Emphasize Optimism Around Rookie QB Fernando Mendoza

The Las Vegas Raiders are in the first year of a rebuild under head coach Klint Kubiak and have added rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Defensive end Maxx Crosby said on June 3 that the team must stay optimistic, noting, “If you don’t believe, you have no chance,” and urging teammates to focus on winning rather than rebuilding narratives. Defensive coordinator Rob Leonard added that coaching Crosby remains a priority after a failed trade attempt.

Tight end Brock Bowers praised Mendoza’s leadership and work ethic, saying the rookie is “a great guy” and emphasizing the need for chemistry and effort to lift the franchise. Both players highlighted the importance of belief and collaboration as the Raiders aim to improve and become competitive in the AFC.
