Kirk Cousins named Las Vegas Raiders starting quarterback

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak has named veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins the starter for the team’s Week 1 game against the Miami Dolphins on September 13. The decision concludes a preseason competition that included rookie and No. 1 overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza.

Cousins, entering his 15th NFL season, signed a deal with the Raiders that includes $20 million in guaranteed money. Kubiak noted that Cousins earned the position through a strong offseason and training camp, citing his leadership and command of the offense. The move is viewed as a way to provide stability and mentorship to Mendoza, who will serve as the primary backup. Mendoza becomes the first No. 1 overall pick since Baker Mayfield in 2018 to not start his rookie season.

In addition to the quarterback announcement, the Raiders expressed optimism regarding running back Ashton Jeanty’s recovery from an ankle injury, suggesting he may be ready for the season opener. Meanwhile, rookie defensive end Keyron Crawford has been placed on injured reserve following an Achilles injury.
