Las Vegas tests AI traffic lights to spotlight pedestrians

Las Vegas is testing an artificial intelligence-driven traffic light system at 16 intersections designed to improve pedestrian visibility. Using SecurOS Soffit cameras developed by the American company ISS, the system analyzes the posture, movements, and facial expressions of people approaching crosswalks. If the algorithm determines a person intends to cross, it activates a spotlight that follows the pedestrian across the street.

The technology has sparked debate regarding both privacy and effectiveness. Critics have raised concerns about the collection of biometric data by a private company and how that information is managed. Additionally, safety experts note that the system provides no specific signals or acoustic warnings to drivers. Organizations such as the NHTSA suggest that pedestrian accidents are often caused by speeding, distracted driving, or impaired driving, factors that a spotlight alone may not mitigate. Furthermore, guidelines from the Federal Highway Administration and the IIHS do not list facial recognition as a primary solution for saving lives in urban environments.
