Laser Technology Enables PFAS‑Free Coatings
Femtosecond lasers can replace fluorinated "forever chemicals" (PFAS) by creating micro‑ and nano‑scale surface textures that make materials water‑repellent without chemical coatings. Startup LITILIT in Vilnius, Lithuania, demonstrates the approach, saying the ultra‑short light pulses reshape surfaces before heat spreads, allowing applications from building facades to metal and glass products.
At the same time, Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) is developing industrial laser processes to produce PFAS‑free functional layers on metal components, bearings, seals and elastomer rollers. Projects such as RePEEK, EPOS, LEMBAS and pureWaterSeal use laser‑localized energy to fuse polymers like PEEK, polyamide or polypropylene onto parts, preserving temperature‑sensitive substrates and avoiding energy‑intensive furnace steps. Both initiatives respond to tightening US and global regulations that restrict PFAS in consumer goods, cosmetics and industrial products due to their links to cancer, organ damage and developmental harms.
