Lasse Virén honored in Myrskylä for 50th anniversary of 1976 Olympic victories

On the evening of 1 August, the village of Myrskylä hosted a commemorative sports gathering to mark the 50th anniversary of Lasse Virén’s double gold medals at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Virén, who won the 5,000 m and 10,000 m races, addressed the crowd, thanked his hometown and the Myrsky sports club, and offered advice to young athletes.

The celebration featured video highlights of the 1976 races and brought together a distinguished group of Finnish Olympic medalists, including wrestler Pertti Ukkola, rower Pertti Karppinen, javelin thrower Hannu Siitonen, cross‑country skier Juha Mieto and Greco‑Roman wrestler Jouko Salomäki. The event underscored the lasting legacy of Finland’s endurance‑running tradition and the community spirit of local sports clubs.
