Last Ditch Bar faces controversy over mask policy change

The Last Ditch Bar and Arts Venue in Greenfield, Massachusetts, has become the center of a viral social media controversy following its decision to relax long-standing COVID-era masking requirements. The venue, which previously mandated KN-95 respirators to ensure accessibility for immunocompromised patrons, announced in late August that Saturday nights would become mask-optional to help boost business and attract more customers.

The policy change sparked intense backlash within the LGBTQ+ community, with critics labeling the move a “mass disabling event.” The tension escalated during the bar’s first mask-optional event, a goth-themed night, which was nearly canceled due to staff concerns regarding “infiltrators” and unspecified “safety breaches.” During the event, staff implemented strict security measures, including requiring patrons to surrender identification.

Owner Jackie Matellian, who is reportedly struggling financially and managing the business alone, has expressed that she feels she is failing at the role. The dispute has gained significant national attention, with coverage from The Boston Globe driving widespread online discourse. The story has become so prominent that talent agency UTA is reportedly fielding inquiries regarding potential film or documentary adaptations of the saga.
