Last Night of the Proms draws scrutiny over EU flag displays

The BBC’s Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall has drawn attention due to the prominent display of European Union flags among the audience. Observers noted that the blue and gold banners appeared to outnumber Union Jacks during certain performances, including renditions of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’.

This visual display has sparked criticism from political figures. Andrew Rosindell, a Member of Parliament for Reform UK, described the event as being ‘spoilt by selfish pro-EU fanatics’ and suggested the BBC implement a flag policy. Former Conservative MP Jane Stevenson also criticized the atmosphere, characterizing it as being influenced by ‘Remain propaganda pushers’.

In contrast, some commentators viewed the variety of flags—including those from Switzerland, Finland, the US, and Germany—as a reflection of the international nature of classical music. The Royal Albert Hall has noted that while flags are permitted, they must not interfere with the smooth running of the concert.
