LASTMA warns against using rolling skate shoes on highways
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a warning against the use of rolling skate shoes, wheeled footwear, and similar recreational devices on public highways, bridges, and other vehicular corridors. The authority noted that these devices are being used by children, teenagers, and young adults in environments designed for motorized traffic, creating significant and avoidable safety risks.
LASTMA officials stated that using wheeled footwear on highways reduces a person's ability to react to sudden vehicular movements, which can lead to life-threatening collisions. The authority urged parents, schools, and caregivers to discourage such activities on expressways and service lanes, recommending instead that skating be restricted to private compounds or designated recreational areas.
General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility and that the preservation of human life must remain the priority. The authority also advised users to utilize protective gear, such as helmets and knee pads, when engaging in skating activities in appropriate settings.
