Latacunga announces main characters for Mama Negra 2026

The main characters for the 2026 Mama Negra festivities in Latacunga, Cotopaxi, have been officially designated. The celebration, which highlights the cultural identity of the region, will feature a parade in November 2026.

The designated figures include Alejandro Sebastián Fabara Torres as the Ángel de la Estrella, Carlos Andrés Tovar Amores as the Rey Moro, Luis Rodrigo Cepeda Valverde as the Abanderado, and Francisco Javier Mullo Sosa as the Capitán. José Marcelo Mogro will serve as the Prioste Mayor.

A schedule of ‘jochas’ (traditional activities) has been established to precede the main festivities. These events will take place between September 16 and October 10, 2026, at various locations including the San Agustín plaza, El Loreto neighborhood, and the Tribuna Cívica. Local authorities have announced that security measures and controls on alcohol sales and unauthorized vendors will be implemented during these events.
