Latacunga-La Maná road: Government begins 3 million dollar variant construction

The Ecuadorian government has launched the construction of a definitive one-kilometer road variant to replace the damaged section of the Latacunga-La Maná highway in Saraugsha. The project involves a 3 million dollar investment and is expected to be completed within four months. Governor of Cotopaxi, Jorge Baño, confirmed that technical surveys and topography work have already begun.

While the permanent works are underway, the Ministry of Infrastructure will maintain the provisional route to ensure continuous vehicle circulation. Baño noted that technical reports regarding mass movements in the area prevent the Provincial Government from intervening directly, despite requests from Cotopaxi Prefect Lourdes Tibán.

Prefect Tibán has expressed concern regarding the upcoming rainy season and the potential for worsening conditions. She offered to provide machinery and trucks from the Prefecture to perform provisional repairs to the existing cut in the road to prevent emergency access issues for ambulances and heavy machinery. Tibán is also seeking to coordinate with authorities in Tungurahua and Los Ríos to establish alternative routes in case the Saraugsha corridor becomes impassable.
