Latacunga urban laboratory pilot introduces pedestrian-focused street design
The Colegio de Arquitectos de Cotopaxi has launched an urban laboratory pilot project in Latacunga. Running from September 28 to October 5, the initiative involves placing various planters and urban greenery, such as ficus and molles, across two streets to transform the area into a temporary cultural and pedestrian space.
Carlos González, president of the guild, stated the goal is to create healthier, more integrated, and pedestrian-friendly cities. The project aims to encourage reflection on urban mobility and the necessity of vehicle use for short distances. While some citizens have supported the initiative by adding their own plants, others have raised questions regarding the long-term results. The guild intends for this to foster a dialogue between institutions and citizens to define how public space should be utilized.
