LatAm-FINGERS program improves brain health in Latin America

A two-year study conducted by the Latin American Initiative for Lifestyle Intervention to Prevent Cognitive Decline (LatAm-FINGERS) has provided evidence that multi-faceted lifestyle interventions can improve thinking abilities in older adults at risk of cognitive decline.

The program, which involved 1,065 participants across 12 research sites in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay, focused on regular assistance with diet, exercise, mental activity, social connection, and cardiovascular health. Unlike general advice, this structured approach showed greater benefits for cognitive function.

A key component of the research was cultural adaptation, ensuring interventions were compatible with local traditions, foods, and climates. For example, participants engaged in familiar activities such as tango and salsa. The findings were presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2026 and published in The Lancet.
