Late-night eating disrupts biological rhythms, expert warns

Prof. Dr. Serap Baydur Şahin, an endocrinology and metabolism specialist at Medical Park Göztepe Hospital, warns that eating late at night can disrupt the body's circadian rhythm. This disruption can negatively impact metabolism, blood sugar levels, and sleep patterns by interfering with hunger and satiety signals.

According to Dr. Şahin, the body is metabolically more efficient at utilizing energy during the day. Consuming calories late at night may result in lower energy expenditure during digestion and can make weight control more difficult. Such habits are noted as a potential risk factor for obesity, particularly among shift workers.

Furthermore, late-night consumption of carbohydrates and sugars can lead to higher post-meal blood sugar and insulin levels compared to daytime consumption, as insulin sensitivity typically decreases as the day progresses. This pattern may also facilitate fat accumulation, specifically in the abdominal region.
