Late-Night Phone Use May Signal Underlying Stress, Experts Say

Spending hours on a smartphone after feeling exhausted, scrolling through social media or watching videos, is increasingly seen as more than a simple bedtime habit. Experts note that compulsively delaying sleep with short‑form digital content can reflect unresolved pressures such as work demands, future anxieties, or lingering interpersonal issues. The behavior creates a feedback loop: the more one stays awake, the more fatigued the next day, prompting a renewed need for personal time at night, which in turn extends screen use.

When the day’s tasks are finished and external demands subside, the quiet of the evening can bring hidden thoughts to the surface. For many, the phone becomes a means to fill that silence, postponing the need to confront those thoughts. Persistent patterns lasting months, especially when accompanied by discomfort at putting the device down, may indicate that the body and mind require additional rest and stress management.
