Late‑July Garden Tasks: Cherry Pruning, Summer Plantings and Tree Fertilising

Gardeners are advised to prune cherry trees at the end of July, after harvest, when the wood is dry and weather is warm but not extreme. Summer pruning helps the wound dry quickly and reduces the risk of infection such as silver leaf or bacterial canker.

In the same period, late‑July planting remains viable for crops such as cauliflower, broccoli and eggplant. Seedlings should be watered thoroughly at planting and kept moist during dry spells. Broccoli should be harvested while the head is well‑developed but before the florets open fully. Eggplant benefits from light pruning of side shoots to focus growth on fewer, larger fruits. Fruit trees like apple, pear, plum, apricot and peach can be supported with a summer application of potassium‑rich fertilizer, avoiding excess nitrogen that encourages excessive shoot growth.
