Laternenring traffic sign explained

The ‘Laternenring’ is one of the oldest traffic signs used in Germany and Austria, yet it remains widely misunderstood by many drivers. This sign consists of a red and white sticker applied to street lamp posts at a height of approximately 1.50 to 1.80 meters.

According to the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), the sign indicates that street lights within built-up areas do not remain illuminated throughout the entire night. The red section of the sticker may include white text specifying the exact time the lights are turned off.

Drivers parking near these lamps are legally obligated to make their vehicles visible to other road users, for example, by using parking lights or standby lights. Failure to do so in the event of an accident may result in the driver being held liable for a portion of the damages.
