Latgale police detain individuals for desecrating Latvian flags
The Latvian State Police have launched two criminal investigations following incidents of state symbol desecration in the Latgale region.
On August 21, in Daugavpils, unidentified individuals removed the Latvian national flag from its holder and placed it on the ground. Police reported that the suspects appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time, and one individual filmed the act. The suspects were detained and placed in temporary custody.
On the evening of August 22, in Preiļi, three youths were detained after allegedly attempting to damage the national flag. Initial reports suggest the individuals may have taken flagpoles containing the flags from an apartment building. One person was observed with a flag draped over their shoulder.
Authorities are investigating the motives behind both incidents. Under Section 93 of the Criminal Law, desecration of the Latvian state coat of arms, flag, or anthem is punishable by up to three years of imprisonment, probation, community service, or a fine.
