Latif Abubakar launches theatrical production inspired by UN slave trade resolution

Playwright Latif Abubakar has created a new musical dance theatrical production titled ‘The Darkest Chapter’ at Ghana’s National Theatre. The production is inspired by a historic United Nations General Assembly vote on March 25, 2026, where a resolution spearheaded by the Republic of Ghana declared the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialised chattel enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity in recorded history.

The play draws on the testimony provided to the UN by President John Dramani Mahama and Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The narrative follows ‘The Witness,’ an immortal narrator spanning four hundred years of history, including life in the Gold Coast, the Middle Passage, and Caribbean plantations. The performance integrates West African, contemporary, and Caribbean dance traditions with a live score featuring African percussion, orchestral strings, and gospel-highlife choir.
